Left-back Bia Menezes, 26, is getting her first call-up to represent the Brazilian Women’s National Team. She is with the squad training in San Diego, USA, in preparation for the Gold Cup.
The player spoke to CBF TV about the importance of this step in her career, revealing that she is fulfilling a dream and even remembering the eternal Queen Marta.
“The feeling is that I’m a child again. It’s as if I’ve come back 16 years ago, where I had a dream of being here. It’s like remembering when I saw Marta on television playing in the Pan-American Games and the Olympics. It’s indescribable because I remember the Bia of 16 years ago with a dream seeing her idol on television,” said the full-back.
Bia began her journey at a young age, as a member of the Olympic Center team. She went on to play for clubs such as Audax, Rio Preto, Flamengo and Santos, until she joined São Paulo, her current team.
Mourning and resilience
She also highlighted the fact that she lost her mother, but that her resilience helped her get to the national team.
“Despite the difficulties I faced along the way, some situations in my personal life, especially when I lost my mother, who was always my biggest incentive to be here today, I was very resilient. I overcame obstacles, I faced mourning, which is the hardest part, and I’m here.”
Brazil opens the Gold Cup against Puerto Rico in the early hours of Thursday morning (22), at 0:15 (Brasília time). Then they face Colombia on Sunday (25). On the following Wednesday (28), the match is against Panama.
