What is acute psychotic disorder?

According to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10), acute psychotic disorders are characterized by the rapid manifestation of symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations and disorganization of normal behaviour. The term “acute” suggests that the clinical picture develops over a short period of time, usually up to two weeks.

Psychiatrist Alexandre Valença, from the Brazilian Psychiatry Association, explained to CNN Brasil that this disorder can appear abruptly in people who had no previous psychotic symptoms, which makes the situation even more challenging.

Symptoms and first signs

The symptoms of an acute psychotic condition can vary, but generally include a significant alteration in the judgment of reality, delusions, hallucinations and disorganized thinking. It is very important to be aware of the first signs, such as sudden changes in behavior, disconnected speech and disconnection from reality.

If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, it is essential to seek professional help immediately.

And what are the causes?

The causes of this disorder can be diverse. In some cases, it can appear for no apparent reason, even in people with no previous history of mental illness. However, situations of intense stress, such as traumas or significant losses, can trigger the acute psychotic condition. Genetic factors can also play a role, especially if there is a history of mental disorders in the family.

Diagnosis and treatment

The diagnosis of an acute psychotic condition is based on the patient’s clinical history, symptoms presented and observation of behavior. It is usually necessary for the symptoms to manifest over a period of up to two weeks to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment involves the use of antipsychotic drugs, often combined with psychotherapy to support the patient during the recovery process. With the right treatment, many people manage to recover completely from this disorder in a matter of weeks or months. Seeking professional help at the slightest sign of psychotic symptoms is essential to get started on the road to recovery.
