A report by the São Paulo Football Federation (FPF), released on Thursday (7), says that referee Matheus Delgado Candançan made two mistakes that may have harmed São Paulo in Sunday’s derby against Palmeiras. According to the report, the referee was wrong not to award a penalty to Luciano. It also states that Palmeiras midfielder Richard Ríos should have been sent off.
The FPF sent this document to São Paulo in response to complaints made by the club after the game. Sérgio Corrêa, head of the refereeing department, pointed out that there had been a mistake in not sending off Ríos, after the Colombian came down hard on Pablo Maia. The claim was for ‘serious rough play’.
In addition, a penalty on Luciano was mistakenly missed by the referee, according to Corrêa. According to the report, “there is evidence of a collision from behind, which hindered the striker’s movement, therefore a reckless foul (…) inside the area”. Even so, the FPF did not grant São Paulo’s complaint about Rafael’s penalty on Murilo. This move led to Palmeiras’ Raphael Veiga’s goal.
According to the FPF, it was technology and the support of the VAR that decided to award the penalty. The document states that “If the match had been played between 1914 and 2018, the decision to continue the game would be debated, but the decision on the pitch accepted. But with technology, we have to change the key and understand that we have images that lead to a greater number of hits than in the past.”
