A law graduate from Unioeste, Carla Demétrio decided to take an important and challenging step after 14 years in the legal profession: a career transition. Specializing in business law and intellectual property, in 2019 she founded Mark-Se, a company specializing in trademark and patent management – an area that is still very little explored, but which has enchanted her since she was an undergraduate.
It has to be said that the subject is not considered compulsory in the university curriculum, which makes it even more limited and alien to public understanding. The entrepreneur defines the business as her life project. Recently divorced, the lawyer gave up her marital assets to dedicate herself to the startup, which today stands as one of the pioneers in the market. It was also the first patenting company to open franchises. In all, it has 18 units in the states of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Santa Catarina, Paraná and Minas Gerais.
By 2024, the network aims to open another 50 units around Brazil. In this number, the businesswoman aims to foster female entrepreneurship. Currently, it has around 80% female franchisees, which she sees as a very important step towards female leadership and gender equality in the field.
In addition, she is responsible for devising patent compliance technologies through the Mark-se Express app, whose function is to update the client on the progress of the process and provide the necessary support throughout the concession, which can last up to 5 years on average. This initiative was taken after research revealed that an average of 18,000 to 20,000 inventors are unable to complete the process of patenting their creation due to a lack of knowledge in the area. In line with this, the Federal Senate recorded a 20% drop in patent registrations in Brazil during 2021.
However, she says that the biggest challenge is business management. To this end, Demétrio had to dedicate himself to new studies focused on new business management. Attentive to the needs of the contemporary world, he aims to bring technology more and more into the segment and, with it, promote education on the subject. This year, Mark-Se promises to revolutionize the trademark and patent scene with the launch of 5 pieces of software and apps. It is the sector’s first brandtech, which helps democratize and give entrepreneurs access to registration.
