Porsche prepares hybrid engine for 911 as early as 2024

Europe’s increasingly restrictive emissions laws100% electric cars from Porsche have been able to avoid launching a hybrid version of the 911, the traditional sports car from the Stuttgart manufacturer, which will hit the market later this year.

The new powertrain will arrive with the launch of the mid-life update of the 911, known as the 992.2, scheduled to remain on the market until 2027, when a new generation is expected.

The new powertrain will feature a hybrid system and will only be offered in a new all-wheel drive version. According to the British magazine Autocar, the engine will be a variant of the six-cylinder turbo that already powers the 911. The electric motor will be mounted above the front axle and will be responsible for delivering power to the model’s front wheels.

There will also be a starter motor integrated into the dual-clutch automatic gearbox. The total system will have 400 volts and will have its electrical energy supplied by the combustion engine itself, as well as through braking.

The storage of this energy will be in lithium-ion batteries, which were developed especially for the 911 and will be lightweight. Autocar states that the storage capacity will be much lower than that of plug-in hybrid models from Ferrari and Mercedes, however, the 911’s system is configured to recharge and deliver energy quickly.

The power is still kept secret, as are the applications. The magazine points out that Porsche is preparing new hybrid powertrains for the Cayenne and Panamera, in the Turbo E-Hybrid and Turbo S E-Hybrid versions.

The magazine also confirms that Porsche is preparing the GT2 RS version of the 911. Absent from the line-up since 2019, the GT2 RS version is known as the most brutal available for the traditional sports car, and usually marks the end of a generation of the model. The magazine claims that the 911 GT2 RS will feature a hybrid powertrain with more than 800 hp.

In addition to the new engine, the mid-life update of the 911 promises new bumpers at the front, precisely to improve the passage of cold air to the radiators and brake system. The horizontal design of the bumper details will be replaced by a piece with a vertical design.

The headlights have also been redesigned, with new graphics, HD Matrix LED technology and the ability to illuminate 600 meters ahead.

At the rear, the changes are limited to new designs for the bumper, lights and rear diffuser. Internally, the news should be limited to new software.
