One of the most beloved and famous humanoid robots on the market, the Atlas, from Boston Dynamics, has just been officially retired by the company after 11 years of development.

At first, Atlas was designed to carry out search and rescue missions in areas considered dangerous to humans. However, the development of the robot led it to become known worldwide as the humanoid of various abilities: dancing, running, practicing parkour, pirouetting and much more.

Despite the fact that it was never commercialized and the hydraulic system was considered ‘obsolete’ for robots, Atlas was on the list of the most advanced robots in existence.

The retirement of the humanoid from Boston Dynamics surprised the market, since the company released, in February, videos with new talents of him, such as the ability to work on an automotive production line.

To end the Atlas cycle on a high note, Boston Dynamics – owned by Hyundai since 2021 – published a video to record the trajectory of the humanoid. In addition to showing the evolution of the robot, the video is also a humorous compilation of “bloopers”, of moments when it ended up falling or slipping. Check it out:

“For nearly a decade, Atlas has sparked our imaginations, inspired the next generations of roboticists, and pushed technical barriers in the field,” reads the video’s description on YouTube. “Now it’s time for our Atlas hydraulic robot to kick back and relax.”

Atlas’s retirement surprised everyone at first. However, a day after announcing the pause in the development of the humanoid, the company has already released information about its successor. And the biggest novelty of it is the electrical system instead of the hydraulic, as well as a more robust appearance, more fluid and open movements.
