On Saturday, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian downplayed Friday’s attacks on Israel against Iran, and said there would only be a reaction from Tehran in case Iranian “interests” are attacked.
“What happened last night was not an attack. It was a flight of two or three quadcopters, like our children’s toys in Iran,” Iranian Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian told NBC News.
“As long as there are no new adventures by the Israeli regime against Iranian interests, we will not respond,” he said in the interview, broadcast on Friday.
But “if the Israeli regime intends to take another action against our interests, our next response will be immediate and maximal,” Amir Abdollahian warned.
On Friday, Iran’s state news agencies reported explosions overnight near a military base in the central Isfahan area. As reported by Iran’s space agency, the air defense shot down several drones, but that it did not detect missile strikes.
With Friday’s bombings , the international community made several appeals for calm in the Middle East, a region that has been in conflict since October 7 due to the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, which is backed by Tehran.
Israel has not commented on Friday’s incident in Iran, which has been interpreted as an attempt by both sides to de-escalate the situation, at least for now.
On April 13, Iran launched an unprecedented drone and missile attack on the Jewish state. Most of the missiles were intercepted by Israeli air defense and allied countries such as the United States, Jordan and France.
Tehran called the attack an act of “legitimate defense” in response to the bombing of its consulate in Damascus on April 1.
