A 6-year-old girl was admitted to the Emergency and Trauma Hospital of Campina Grande, in the Paraíba, to operate on his left leg, but, due to a medical error, ended up with the operated right leg. The child’s mother was the one who realized the mistake and went to tell the doctors what had happened.
Afterwards, the girl had to go back to the operating room to have the pins placed in the right leg. The entire procedure took place last Thursday night (25).
The professionals involved in the surgery were removed and, according to the hospital, an investigation has already been opened to investigate the case.
According to the column by Carlos Madeiro, from UOL, the case is being investigated by the institution itself, by the CRM (Regional Council of Medicine) and by the State Public Prosecutor’s Office. In addition, the family also filed a police report with the Central de Flagrantes of the Civil Police of Campina Grande.
The hospital’s technical director, Dr . Flávio Daniel, explained to g1 that the investigations will be monitored by the Patient Safety Center and the institution’s Medical Ethics Committee . He said he will provide the necessary assistance to the patient and her family until the girl is discharged.
To the newspaper, the family members said that the child had already been complaining of pain and was hospitalized for more than two months. Before that, she had also had surgery on her left leg to remove a thrombus. However, 15 days later she felt pain again and was diagnosed with infectious cellulitis and referred for surgery.
