Popó acknowledged that facing the actor will be the ‘biggest challenge of his life’, even with some world titles under his belt. Van Damme became famous for starring in several action and fighting films, such as ‘The Great White Dragon’ and ‘Kickboxer’.
“Since the whole of Brazil saw my last fight, I couldn’t smell it. Now I’m going to be bolder and challenge a thick-skinned and internationally renowned. Someone who came to Brazil and we know him very well. You already know who it is, right? This is going to be the most daring challenge of my life, and I’ve been a four-time world champion. Van Damme, your time will come. Are you going to face it or are you going to take it?” said Popó.
After ending his boxing career, Popó has been fighting some personalities in exhibition bouts. The former world champion faced the likes of Whindersson Nunes, Pelé Landy, Júnior Dublê and Kleber Bambam.
Popó’s disagreement with Belfort, the last name with whom the boxer tried to negotiate, was over the weight limit for the fight. The parties were unable to reach a consensus and the talks were ‘frozen’.
