French police have arrested a man who was planning to carry out an attack on the Olympic torch relay, which arrives in the city of Bordeaux this Thursday (23). French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin confirmed that authorities had detained the suspect.
According to information from the BBC, the man came under investigation for having made some posts on social networks, in which he threatened to carry out an attack in Bordeaux.
In addition to the mention that there could be an attack, the suspect also alluded, in his posts, to an attack that occurred in 2014, in California, which resulted in six deaths.
Also according to the BBC, local authorities seized some materials from the suspect’s home, such as a rubber gun, computer and cell phones. The man has no criminal record, however, confessed that he was considering carrying out an attack.
Through social networks, Gérald Darmanin spoke about the arrest of the suspect: “An individual who was planning a violent action during the Olympic torch relay in Bordeaux has been arrested. Thank you to the police officers and, more broadly, to all the agents of the Ministry who ensured this popular festival with remarkable professionalism and commitment.”
