President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva made official the removal of the Brazilian ambassador Brazilian ambassador to Israel, transferring it to Geneva, Switzerland. The decision was published in the official gazette on Wednesday (29). Ambassador Frederico Meyer had returned to the country on Friday (24), after almost three months away, and will now assume a permanent mission at the Conference on Disarmament in Geneva.
In February, Meyer endured an awkward moment when he was summoned by Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz to the Holocaust Museum to hear public complaints about a statement by Lula. On the occasion, the Brazilian president compared Israel’s actions against Gaza to Hitler’s actions against the Jews.
In addition, Meyer was informed during the meeting that the Brazilian president was considered “persona non grata” in the country. Katz’s behavior was deemed “unacceptable” by the Brazilian government.
