Bodybuilder Igor Porto, who brutally beat his partner, Marcela Luíse, to the death in Aparecida de Goiânia, in the Metropolitan Region of the capital, became a defendant on Thursday (30).
Igor took her to the hospital, claiming that the woman had fallen at home on May 10. According to information from the Civil Police (PC), Marcela had head trauma, eight broken ribs and several abrasions on her body, indicating a serious physical assault.
The bodybuilder’s defense said, in a statement, that it was not surprising that the court accepted the complaint and that he believes in the criminal investigation. She also says that it will be shown that the facts did not happen as narrated by the prosecution.
The court accepted the complaint filed by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Goiás (MP-GO). The agency alleges that Igor committed the crime by cruel means, making it impossible for the victim to defend himself.
In addition, the bodybuilder is accused of femicide, for having committed the crime because the victim was a woman. The defendant and his defense were given 10 days to present documents and justifications.
Igor Porto was arrested on May 17 after assaulting his partner Marcela Luise. 31 years old, according to delegate Bruna Coelho, from the Specialized Police Station for Assistance to Women (Deam) of Aparecida de Goiânia.
“We went to [the house] and asked for an on-site forensic examination. An expert was also at the hospital and we heard from several people,” Coelho said. The sheriff believes the bodybuilder beat the woman and took her to the hospital.
“He told the medical staff that she was cleaning the house when she slipped and fell. According to him, she convulsed and the injuries were caused by the fall. So he gave her a bath and took her to the hospital, where she was immediately taken for surgery and then to the ICU,” he said.
“The hospital contacted the police station informing them that it is a case of multiple injuries, which is not consistent with a fall. She had head trauma on both sides of her head and at the base of her skull, fractured her collarbone, eight ribs and had several abrasions on her body,” he said.
Igor has a history of domestic violence, both with Marcela and with an ex-girlfriend. The police were alerted by the hospital to the suspicious circumstances of Marcela’s case, which led to the investigations that resulted in the arrest of the suspect.
Igor’s defense, in a press release, reiterated its position that preventive detention would not be justified, considering his lawful profession, fixed address, and cooperation with law enforcement authorities during investigations.
Note from Igor’s defense in full:
“From the point of view of the defense, the requirements of preventive detention are not present, that is, to guarantee public order, guarantee criminal investigation or ensure criminal application. Let me explain: Igor has a legal profession, he is a nutritionist and physical educator, he has a fixed address, he is primary. At no time is there anything in the process that interfered with the proper progress of the investigation, on the contrary, the Civil Police was at his residence after hours in order to carry out an investigation, and he authorized it. This expertise was inconclusive. It is important to note that the lawyer colleague who was accompanying Igor had already gone to the Police Station and made Igor available to the police authority. So far, Igor has not been heard. The defense will file the appropriate requests for preventive detention to be replaced by precautionary measures other than imprisonment.”
