Cyclist Lais Saes died after being run over last Thursday (30) during a training session in the region of Delfinópolis, southwest of Minas Gerais. At the age of 43, Lais left a legacy in cycling, with victories, in addition to being an inspiration in the sport.

The cyclist was born in Jundiaí, in the interior of São Paulo, Lais stood out in cycling in 2021, when she won the São Paulo road cycling championship in the Elite category, representing the Indaiatuba Cycling Team. Living in Indaiatuba for the past few years, Lais completed the eight laps of the competition, totaling 68 km in 1 hour, 59 minutes and 3 seconds, achieving her first major victory.

In addition to the state title, also in 2021, Lais won her first national title at the 8th Brasil Road, held in Pardinho (SP). The city is known for its challenging landscapes and terrain, which are ideal for cycling.

Off the track, Lais worked as a commercial manager and was an active figure on social media, where she has 34 thousand followers. She shared her workout routine and physical preparation. 

In addition to her championship achievements, Lais was the first woman to complete the ascent of Pico do Jaraguá, the highest point in the city of São Paulo, located in the Serra da Cantareira, with 1,135 meters of altitude.

HOW DID THE TRAGEDY OCCUR?

The tragedy occurred while Lais was training on one of her favorite routes, known for its mountainous terrain ideal for cycling. During training, Lais and her group were surprised by an off-road vehicle, known as a UTV, which jumped and hit the cyclist. The vehicle, a type of ATV, was speeding and veered into the oncoming lane, resulting in the fatal crash.

The Civil Police of Minas Gerais reported that the driver of the UTV fled the scene without rendering aid and has not yet been identified. Lais Saes  was mourned this Saturday (1) in Jundiaí.
