In a statement on Saturday (8), the Argentine government denied having any information about the participation of Brazilians in the anti-democratic incidents that occurred on January 8. These events, according to reports from the Federal Police, would have led some individuals to seek refuge in Argentina.

On Friday (7), the PF announced its intention to send a request for the extradition of convicted Brazilians to the Argentine authorities.

Argentina’s Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrich, declared that she had not received any official request and highlighted the absence of records of the entry of fugitive Brazilians.

“To date, we have not been informed about this situation. There are no red notices related to these people,” Bullrich said in an interview with Argentina’s Radio Mitre.

She added that, for now, she considers the extradition request to be “mere propaganda.” The director-general of the Federal Police, Andrei Passos Rodrigues, informed Valdo Cruz’s blog that the request will be forwarded next week.

“It’s one thing for Brazil to request extradition, but there needs to be a judicial process, a conviction. It is difficult to request extradition without a solid judicial basis or a specific warning. In addition, we do not have a list of Brazilians. For now, it’s more of an advertisement than a legal fact,” Bullrich said.

This was the first official statement by the Argentine government after the PF’s announcement of the extradition request.

Operation Lesa Patria

Investigations into Operation Lesa Patria revealed that individuals fleeing the attacks on democracy sought shelter in Argentina.

Argentine authorities have identified about 65 of those fugitives, none of whom have passed through immigration controls.

Investigations indicate that some fugitives may have entered the country clandestinely, including hiding in the trunks of vehicles. Others crossed the border on foot, over the bridge, or across the Paraná River. All leaks occurred in 2024.

These findings came after a mega operation by the Federal Police last week, which aimed to arrest those involved, including some fugitives, in the anti-democratic acts of January 8, 2023, when the headquarters of the Three Powers were invaded and damaged.
