Ecuadorian football is in mourning. Barcelona de Guayaquil goalkeeper Justin Cornejo died last Tuesday (16), at the age of 20. According to information from the Ecuadorian press, the athlete would have died after hitting his head while slipping while bathing.
Justin Cornejo’s death was confirmed by Barcelona on social media: “No words or phrases can ease the pain we feel now. The memory he leaves us will be what will give us the strength we need to get out of this situation. Justin, you will always be in our hearts. Rest in peace, friend. We love you,” the club wrote.
Barcelona has a game scheduled for this Wednesday (17), in Ecuador, against Red Bull Bragantino, for the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana playoffs. However, given Cornejo’s death, the match may be postponed.
Through social networks, Bragantino expressed solidarity with the Ecuadorian team: “Red Bull Bragantino regrets the death of the player Justin Cornejo, from Barcelona Sporting Club, wishing much strength to the athlete’s family and friends. Likewise, the club stands in solidarity with the players, coaching staff and board of directors of the Ecuadorian team in this moment of mourning and sadness.”
