Deforestation has a record drop in the Amazon, but grows in the Cerrado

Deforestation in the Legal Amazon area had the largest proportional issue recorded for the period, according to the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe).

Official data show that, between August 2023 and July 2024, the accumulation of deforestation alerts was 4,314.76 km² – a drop of 45.7% compared to the previous two seasons.

This is also the largest proportional drop ever recorded for the period. The previous number was 7,952 km² (Aug/22 and Jul/23).

Alerts of falling devastation

The disclosure of deforestation numbers is from the Real-Time Deforestation Detection System (Deter).

In addition to the full period, the institute carries out monthly alert releases. The last few months have indicated a considerable decrease in deforestation. The series of reports began in 2015 and the current number is the highest historical low.

Punctual increase

Although the balance of the period is positive, July saw an increase in deforestation. Compared to the period of 2023, the month had 33% more.

Even so, the number is better than in 2022, during Jair Bolsonaro’s term: the reduction was 55%.

Cerrado has record deforestation

The Cerrado, according to INPE, goes in the opposite direction and has a record of deforestation. There were 7,015 km², equivalent to 9% growth.
