Minister says it was the ice on the wing that caused the plane to crash

The Minister of Defense, José Múcio Monteiro, said that the crash of the Voepass plane in Vinhedo was caused by ice on the wings.

He also ruled out the attempt to contact the pilot and the flight controllers in that region. It is worth mentioning that the crash site is surrounded by the airports of Viracopos, Jundiaí and the smaller Amarais, also in Campinas.

The condominium where the plane crashed is next to the main land connection of the airport of Viracopos with the city of Vinhedo.

Secretariat Monteiro denied the suspicions created in WhatsApp groups, saying that there was a failure in this communication, such as a refusal for the aircraft to enter the descent procedure.

How does the ice issue work?

In some air accidents, the accumulation of ice on the wings has been a critical factor. Ice can alter the airflow over the wings, compromising the aircraft’s lift and leading to loss of control. This is because ice changes the shape of the wing, affecting its aerodynamics and flight efficiency.

Some aircraft are equipped with de-icing systems, but in some extreme circumstances, these systems may not be sufficient, resulting in accidents. Investigation of accidents of this type usually confirms whether ice was the main cause.

The formation of ice on the wings of an airplane occurs when the aircraft flies through clouds that contain supercooled water droplets, that is, water that remains liquid below 0°C.

When these droplets come into contact with the surface of the wing, which is also at sub-zero temperatures, they instantly freeze, forming a layer of ice.
