The beginning of the lie
It was in December 2023 that Laís Basílio, a Brazilian born in São Paulo and who now lives in Ireland, told through her social networks that She had been diagnosed with bone marrow cancer and urgently needed a transplant. The influencer stated that she had stopped working and was unable to support herself, which won the support of many people.
The community of Brazilians in Ireland mobilized to help Laís financially and also in the search for a compatible donor, as well as several people who were sensitized by the situation and made donations to her. According to the newspaper O Globo, through transfers by pix and online crowdfunding, Laís would have collected about 36 thousand reais.
Donations for the treatment were requested on a website promoted by Lais and other Brazilians who also live in Ireland. On this site, there was a text telling Laís’ story with the disease.
“Hello, my name is Laís, I’m 23 years old and I discovered cancer in December 2023. Since then I have undergone chemotherapy, surgery and radiotherapy and now I am looking for a compatible bone marrow donor. Since I received the diagnosis, I stopped working and, consequently, I am not receiving a salary or government aid, because I am here as an exchange student and I do not have enough time to contribute. By now I was living on my savings and help from friends. I decided to create this fundraiser to help me with the payment of the bills and also because I want to bring my mother to be here with me. I thank everyone from the bottom of my heart and any help is welcome.”
The revelation
The profile “Pobre na Irlanda” on Instagram summarized the story, telling how the whole case had been an invention of the Brazilian to make money. Laís even participated in podcasts, gave interviews to the press and published photos in the hospital, images that they discovered to be fake.
After the repercussion of the suspicions and the indignation of her supporters, Laís went public and admitted the farce.
“I started this by putting my face here and I’m going to end by putting my face. I am here to bear this and I would very much like to ask forgiveness from the entire Brazilian community and the entire oncology society. I really hope that after this passes, you will continue to have support,” he said in a video published on his profiles.
Gabriela Cruz, who also lives in Ireland, was one of the people to mobilize to help the Brazilian and also one of those who suspected the veracity of the case. She joined other people in the Brazilian community to seek out the police and understand what measures could be taken. However, Gabriela reported to O Globo that the case could not be registered as fraud because people donated the money of their own volition.
Therefore, the situation has not been resolved and to know the outcome of the story only by following the next news.
