The body of presenter Silvio Santos was buried this Sunday morning (18) at the Israeli Cemetery of Butantã, in São Paulo. The ceremony was restricted to friends and family. Due to Jewish traditions, there was no public wake. The request for privacy was also reinforced in life by the presenter, who is the son of Jewish immigrants.
According to Silvio’s family, while still alive, the presenter said he did not want to have his image exploited after death.
“He asked that, as soon as he left, that we take him straight to the cemetery and have a Jewish ceremony. He asked us not to exploit his passage. He liked to be celebrated in life and would like to be remembered with the joy he lived. He asked us to respect his wishes. And so we will do,” family members said in a statement.
The presenter and businessman died at 4:50 am this Saturday (17) as a result of bronchopneumonia after an Influenza (H1N1) infection. He was hospitalized at Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, in São Paulo.
Silvio Santos is survived by his wife Íris, two daughters from his first marriage and four daughters from his second marriage, as well as grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
