The interior of São Paulo dawned gray and dry this Saturday (24) due to fires in several areas of the state. In all, there were 2,316 fire outbreaks registered between Thursday (22) and Friday (23), a number almost 7 times higher than that reported in the entire month of August last year, when 352 incidents were recorded.
Information from the National Institute for Space Research (Inpe) places the state of São Paulo at the top of the ranking of fires at the end of this week, followed by Mato Grosso, where 1,237 fires were detected, and Pará, with 987 fires.
In this way, São Paulo is ahead of states in the Legal Amazon, which also go through fire season, with smoke that reaches other regions of the country – such as the South and Southeast.
The fires are mainly concentrated in municipalities in the region of Ribeirão Preto (SP), São José do Rio Preto (SP), Presidente Prudente (SP), São Carlos (SP) and Bauru (SP).
The data are obtained by the BDQueimadas Program, maintained by Inpe, which is based on reference satellites, that is, used to obtain the data that make up the historical series and allow the comparison between different periods.
Crisis containment cabinet
The state government created a crisis cabinet to discuss solutions to the problem in the face of occurrences in sugarcane fields and the death of two workers who were trying to fight the fire this Friday in Urupês.
