archive The Civil Police of Guarulhos (SP) concluded the investigation of the Joca case, a 5-year-old dog that died after an error in the animal transport service of the airline Gol. According to the final report, the dog died on a flight from Fortaleza (CE) to São Paulo.
On April 22 of this year, Joca was supposed to leave São Paulo International Airport, in Guarulhos, bound for Sinop (MT). However, a mistake by GOLLOG, a Gol company, put the 5-year-old Golden Retriever on an aircraft bound for Fortaleza. As soon as it found the error, the company put the animal on a flight to São Paulo, where it died.
In this way, the Gold Retriever’s trip, which should have been 2h30, went to 8 hours. According to the investigation report, the dog remained in Fortaleza for about 40 minutes and the death occurred inside the aircraft, on his return to SP.
Cause of death
Last week, a report issued by the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science of the University of São Paulo (USP) determined that the cause of death of the dog Joca was cardiogenic shock. This condition occurs when the heart cannot pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs.
Veterinarian Fátima Martins pointed out that the cardiogenic shock was a consequence of the hyperthermia (elevation of body temperature) that Joca suffered and, therefore, there was cardiorespiratory arrest.
She explained that Joca’s organs showed signs of lack of oxygenation due to hyperthermia, which caused stress and dehydration, exacerbating his preexisting heart conditions.
“The very stress he went through could already lead to death. And the stress followed by dehydration with the comorbidities he had, and lived very well with them and was not limiting, he would not have died. He had cardiac alterations, but the aggravating factor was hyperthermia that led to dehydration and hypovolemic shock”, explained the professional.
