The Court of Rio de Janeiro authorized the correction of the name and sex of a baby born at the Rocha Faria Municipal Hospital, initially registered as female. The decision was shown on the television program RJ1.
The child had been registered as a girl, but almost a year after birth, a doctor’s consultation revealed that the baby is actually a boy with a genital malformation.
The baby was sent to the Children’s Hospital, of the State Government, for a correction operation. However, he needs new documents, with the updated male name and gender, to start the surgical process.
About 2 thousand Brazilian children are born annually with this condition. From January to May 2024, there were 740 newborns across the country, according to data from the Federal Government’s Live Birth Information System (Sinasc).
