Athos Bulcão: fifteen years of nostalgia for the man who colored BrasíliaIsadora Campos

An open-air monument, Brasília is contemplated for its modernist architecture and recognized for the white and concrete marbles that cover the geometricism of its facades. But it is also acclaimed for the iconic work of the one who colored the capital with his art: Athos Bulcão.

Its sculptural panels, in tiles, paintings, marble or steel, give the bossa of the carioca who adopted Brasília as his home. For 15 years of nostalgia for the renowned artist, his legacy remains alive through the work of his right-hand man and great friend, Valéria Maria Lopes Cabral, executive secretary and face of the Athos Bulcão Foundation.

Athos is part of the artistic tripod that masterfully designed the city, alongside Oscar Niemeyer and Roberto Burle Marx, and redesigned national modernism. He left us on July 31, 2008, at the age of 90.

Since the inauguration of the foundation, in 1992, Valéria has intertwined her story, at the foundation and in Brasília, with that of the artist. This friendship and care have projected its Foundation to the international light. “A creative, humorous friendship, permeated by trips to exhibitions, cinema, lunches, cornbread and excellent conversations”, he recalls.

Valéria, in fact, lives the art of Athos. Not only in her work, but in her residence, where an exclusive panel was designed by the artist for her. “The works of integration in architecture created by Athos Bulcão have no name. My dashboard was created for my home. He followed the project, we made the model and he designed them especially for the places he chose”, he summarizes.

There are about thirty categories of products sold with the authorization of the Foundation, whose revenue is entirely destined to the maintenance of the headquarters, today located at 510 Sul, in a rented space, while the dream of its own headquarters does not get off the ground.

“We usually celebrate the professor’s birthday and the institution’s. On these dates, we always launch new products, catalog of the collection, hold exhibitions, among other events”, presents about the campaigns designed to help “in the maintenance of the institution and reach the long-awaited land for the construction of a definitive space for the Foundation”, completes about the main goal in this milestone of 15 years of the death of the valued artist.

Among the products with the highest demand are the recognized serigraphs, panels and frames of tiles and various items, usually found in museums around the world. In Brasília there are approximately 260 works in public agencies – National Congress, Ministry of Health, Regional Hospital of Taguatinga, Cathedral, Baptistery, TV Tower, Cláudio Santoro Theater, Class Schools, UnB, Kindergartens and Sarah Network.
