On Tuesday (20), the dam of the dam located in the luxury condominium Nasa Park, located between Campo Grande and Jaraguari, in the Mato Grosso do Sul, ruptured, resulting in a series of serious problems. The leaked water invaded several houses and part of the BR-163, causing the total closure of the highway near km 500. So far, there is no information on victims.
The dam has an area of more than 20 hectares and is located in the center of approximately 100 luxury homes. Images sent by residents to g1 show water invading the properties, while the area was without electricity and internet. Drivers who were on BR-163 at the time of the rupture recorded videos of muddy water covering the highway.
G1 contacted a partner who owns the Nasa Park subdivision, who said he was investigating the situation. “We have to wait, we don’t have any concrete information so far. The engineer of the work at the time is already aware,” he said.
The Fire Department confirmed the dam rupture and the team responsible for Civil Defense dams went to the site to assess the situation.
Desperation
The incident occurred on the morning of Tuesday (20) and generated great concern among residents and drivers. Silvana Pache, owner of a property in the condominium, highlighted the lack of regular maintenance at the site. “It is a very high investment that is made to have a lot and this happens now. It is necessary to understand what happened, it was certainly a lack of maintenance,” he said.
A resident of the region, who preferred not to be identified, reported that the rupture left four children and an elderly person trapped in a house next to the highway. “The dam rupture was unexpected. Now that I got news that my family is well, since there is no signal in the region,” he said.
Drivers were taken by surprise by the invasion of water on the road. Rosane Ferreira Amorim, who was passing by the place, described the scene as extremely fast. “I heard a noise and, soon after, the water had already taken over the stretch of highway. At first, we thought it could be a truck with fuel leaking due to the gushing of water and black earth on the road. The bus stopped and I couldn’t overtake him in time, being forced to stop behind him,” he reported.
“The water came down very hard. A truck ahead sped up and we all managed to hold on to our cars. Now, there’s a lot of water coming down and we’re not sure if it was a dam that burst. We are about seven kilometers from Campo Grande. I was on my way to Rio Verde, but the situation on the track is complicated, with many trucks and cars stopped,” he added.
Highway interdicted
In a statement, CCR MSVia, the concessionaire responsible for the highway, informed that its operational teams went to the site to provide support to drivers. The concessionaire also started a contingency plan to ensure safety on the highway and support the affected population.
The Federal Highway Police (PRF) recorded the total closure of the lane and confirmed both the dam rupture and the damage to the highway.
Read the note from the concessionaire sent to g1:
“CCR MSVia informs drivers that the BR-163/MS highway is completely closed at km 500, in Campo Grande (MS), near the border with the municipality of Jaraguari, due to the rupture of a dam of a private enterprise in the region. Operational teams from the User Service (SAU), technicians from the Concessionaire and the Fire Department work so that traffic is released as soon as possible. The Concessionaire initiated a contingency plan for the safety of the highway and its customers, also activating other competent bodies to support the response to the occurrence, such as the Federal Highway Police, Civil Defense, Imasul (Environment Institute of Mato Grosso do Sul) and Ibama (Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources). The guidance is that drivers look for alternative ways to access the region. An option for those traveling northbound is to make the detour through the Dr. Ricardo Trad ring road, which connects Campo Grande to Rochedinho, and which can be accessed from km 495 of BR-163/MS. For those coming from the south, the alternative is to access the access road to Bomfim, at km 529, towards Campo Grande. The warning to drivers about the interdiction is being made through the Fixed and Mobile Variable Message Panels arranged along the highway, Toll Plazas, and by the operation teams on the road. Other questions can be answered by Disque CCR MSVia, through the telephone 0800 648 0163, which answers free of charge, including cell phone calls, and also via WhatsApp”.
