Universidad Católica sacked coach Nicolás Núñez after the Crusaders crashed out of South America prematurely. In the previous group stage, the Santiago side lost 2-0 to Coquimbo Unido.

In addition to Católica’s second consecutive year without a continental calendar, Núñez’s poor record in just 18 matches also weighed heavily. Since July 2023, when he took over, there have been five wins, six draws and seven defeats. As a result, the fall in the South American Championship has made the former Crusaders player’s tenure untenable.

Belonging to the country’s new crop of coaches, Nicolás Nuñez caught the eye with his long tenure at his first job, Magallanes. He started out as an assistant coach at the Maipú-based club and, when he took over as head coach, he built up a career that included almost 100 games and three trophies won. These included the second division of the Chilean Championship, as well as the Chilean Cup and Super Cup.

While Universidad Católica are looking for a new head coach, it has been decided that Rodrigo Valenzuela will be in charge on an interim basis. As such, he should be on the bench next Monday (11), when the team hosts Everton at 19h (Brasília) in the Chilean Championship.
