The bill that increases the content of ethanol blended in gasoline was approved in the Chamber of Deputies last Wednesday (13). According to the document, authored by Arnaldo Jardim (Cidadania-SP), the ethanol added to gasoline would increase from 22% to 27%, and could reach up to 35%.
Called “fuels of the future”, the project also predicts that the amount of biodiesel present in diesel will grow from 14% to 15% in 2025, until it reaches 20% by 2030, with the possibility of reaching 25% by 2031. The increase from 2030 to 2031 will undergo studies and analyses by the CNPE (National Energy Policy Council).
According to the author of the project, the change is moving in the direction of the Green Mobility and Innovation Program (Mover), which provides for the national manufacture of more sustainable vehicles, betting on hybrid and electric powertrains.
The increase of ethanol in gasoline can be harmful in some cases, especially for vehicles with old engines, which were not designed to run on ethanol.
In flex-fuel vehicles, which have already been designed to run on both ethanol and gasoline, consumption when fueled with gasoline will be higher.
For owners of older cars, an alternative may be to bet on premium gasoline, however, they cost even more than regular gasoline.
