An incident involving a howler monkey, an endangered species, occurred in a condominium in Juiz de Fora last Tuesday (16). Pedro Teixeira, a 43-year-old man, was attacked by the primate while walking with his 10-year-old daughter.
The attack happened after Teixeira slipped and fell, which scared the monkey and resulted in the aggression.
Pedro was attended to by doctors and subjected to antibiotic treatment. Fortunately, he is not at risk of death. Pedro’s daughter was not injured during the incident.
The red-haired howler monkey has been attending the condominium for two years and, until recently, was considered tame. However, in recent weeks, the animal has tried to enter homes, causing concern among residents.
The Fire Department, the Civil Defense and the Environmental Police were called to rescue the monkey, but were unable to capture it.
Firefighters advised residents to seek medical attention and record the characteristics of the animal in case they are attacked. In addition, they recommend that the monkey not be fed to prevent it from approaching the houses.
The State Forestry Institute (IEF) informed that it does not collect howler monkeys, because the relocation of the animal would be difficult and it would not be accepted by another flock.
The howler monkey is one of the 25 most endangered primate species.
