Last Sunday (18), a tragic accident in the region of Morangaba, in Campos dos Goytacazes, North Fluminense, resulted in the death of Débora Mothé, 43, and her nephew Romulo Cordeiro, 16. According to the family, Débora would have slipped while trying to take a photo at the waterfall, and Romulo, when trying to rescue her, also ended up falling.

The accident occurred in an area of difficult access, which made the work of rescue teams difficult. After more than 30 hours of intense efforts, the bodies of Débora and Romulo were finally recovered on Monday night (19).

Débora Mothé was a physical education teacher, while Romulo Cordeiro was a student of the integrated technical course in buildings at the Centro campus of the Fluminense Federal Institute (IFF). In response to the tragedy, the institution decreed official mourning and suspended academic activities on Monday, according to a statement from the school.

The bodies were released from the Forensic Medical Institute on Tuesday (20) and buried the same day in the city of São Francisco de Itabapoana. The case was registered at the 143rd Police Station.

Note from the Fluminense Federal Institute:

“With deep regret, we inform the death of the student, Romulo Lopes Cordeiro, from the Integrated Technical Course in Buildings at IFF Campus Campos Centro. The campus decrees official mourning and academic and administrative activities will be suspended from 2:20 pm, on today’s date (08/19).

Our community stands in solidarity with family and friends in this time of pain.

We count on everyone’s understanding.”
